1. CHOOSE THE RIGHT SUITCASE
The first step in packing like a pro is choosing the perfect luggage. The size of the luggage that you bring depends on the length and type of trip, but, trust us, lightweight and medium-sized is the best combination. It is tempting to want to bring a full sized suitcase to fit everything, but avoid lugging a giant suitcase around with you.
2. PACK STRATEGICALLY
You've taken our advice and ditched the large suitcase for a small or medium-sized one. Where do you go from here? For starters, you want to focus on items that you NEED, not items that you think you might want. It's also smart to pack things that can be used in more than one scenario. Comfort and appropriate attire for the country you are visiting are the ultimate goals. When it comes to compressing and fitting all of your belongings, rolling your garments is the way to go! Additionally, use packing cubes to compartmentalize all your clothes into their own spaces and make them easy to find. Finally, wear your heaviest, bulky items on the plane and never pack full-sized toiletries. Unless you’re headed on a multi-month long trip, chances are, you won’t use the bulk of your toiletries. Pack into smaller, reusable containers.
3. LAYERS ARE YOUR FRIEND
When packing for more than one climate, layers are how you will get through the day feeling comfortable and at ease. In one day, you might experience the heat from the hot sun or a cool breeze in the evening. Don’t make the mistake of assuming you won’t want one or two items to provide coverage or warmth. Make sure to bring light cardigans, leggings or packable down-jacket that you can easily layer on or take off when the climate changes.
4. NEVER CHECK ESSENTIAL ITEMS
It is crucial to keep your valuable and essential belongings in your carry-on bag, not in your checked luggage. Your passport, identification, money, credit cards, jewelry, electronics, other valuables and important documents, should always accompany you onto the plane. Additionally, the US Department of State recommends having two extra passport photos with a photocopy of the information page of your passport before leaving on international trips.
5. PACK A LAUNDRY BAG
There's nothing worse than having your dirty clothes rolling around with your clean ones in your luggage. Having a designated laundry bag is essential in keeping your clean clothes fresh, and easily identify your dirty ones when it comes time for laundry day.
6. LEAVE EXPENSIVE ITEMS AT HOME
Expect the unexpected when you travel. Anything from lost or delayed luggage, to items being stolen or damaged. So pack smart and don’t bring anything that you would be devastated to lose. Rule of thumb is, if you're not prepared to lose it, don’t pack it!
7. STAY HYDRATED
A water bottle is the one item you should bring with you no matter where you go. Staying hydrated is key to ensuring happy and healthy travels. Consider a collapsible water bottle to save space. Whatever you do, stay hydrated!
8. LEAVE EXTRA ROOM
Lastly, you will want to make sure you have enough space on your return home to fit any new purchases and souvenirs. Don't stuff your suitcase. Instead, keep it a little underweight or pack a lightweight personal bag to accommodate extra items.
